A laptop purchasing is a confusing and time-consuming process for everyday users especially. Even if you understand everything and know exactly what you want, it may be difficult to locate the required model in a computer store or online platforms. This article is meant to help Pakistani users in selecting the most suitable laptop for their requirements. When searching for a new computer, we want you to be aware of each component's significance. Our objective is to give you with clear explanations by simplifying the technical language.

7 Points to Consider When Buying a Laptop

Operating System

When you begin searching for laptops, you must choose which operating system (OS) is best for you. It determines if your software is compatible with that operating system and which hardware is required. Three below operating system are most popular with users in Pakistan.

Windows:

Windows is the best choice if you want Microsoft apps such as MS Word, Access, or Outlook. Furthermore, Windows laptops are accessible in Pakistan in a broader variety of configurations than those running other operating systems.

MacOS:

MacOS is somewhat more user-friendly than Windows, but it is also tightly interwoven with Apple's laptops. The only item available for purchase is a MacBook. Users in Pakistan do not prefer the MacBook due to its high price.

ChromeOS:

If you can do the bulk of your laptop-related tasks using a web browser, Chrome OS is an excellent alternative. Chrome OS should be considered if you have a minimal budget. Chrome computers, often known as Chromebooks, are renowned for being among the least expensive and possessing the least computing power.

How much processing power you need?

Computer processing power is provided by the processor, sometimes known as a CPU or chip. Intel and AMD are the two producers of laptop Processors for consumer use. We recommend a laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor of the 9th generation or later if you are an average user who uses a web browser, Microsoft's Office Suite, and potentially image editing software. Similarly, the majority of consumers will be satisfied with the AMD Ryzen 5000 series. If you develop software, edit video, or manage very large databases, you'll need more processing power. We propose either an AMD Ryzen 7 or an Intel i7 for such heavy users.

Do you need a GPU?

Theoretically, every laptop contains a graphics card, often known as a GPU, and majority of the laptops have the GPU and CPU integrated into the motherboard. This method, known as "integrated graphics," is appropriate for most users. You will have no problems whether playing casual games or watching high-definition movies. If you often edit films or play video games, though, you should get a laptop with a far more powerful dedicated graphics card. The majority of laptop graphics cards are manufactured by AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia's GeForce series of graphics cards will often be paired with Intel-based laptops, whilst AMD's Radeon series GPUs will be used.

How much RAM?

Random-access memory, or RAM, is used to store data while the CPU processes it. The more Memory you have, the better your computer will perform. If your memory runs out, you won't be able to finish generating your video or open any more browser tabs. When this occurs, your laptop will eventually become inoperable and need a restart. The average Windows user should not need more than eight gigabytes of RAM, however upgrading to sixteen gigabytes will considerably improve your laptop's performance (and is a necessity for gaming). Similarly, if you create software or edit video clips, two tasks that need a great deal of Memory, you will need at least 16 GB, but 32 GB is ideal if you can afford it. Always choose for DDR4 RAM due to its superior performance.

Storage

Your data will be kept on the hard drive. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are the most popular option; however, some low-cost laptops still use spinning drives. While SSDs are speedier, so we advise staying away from spinning drives. The 256 gigabytes is the minimal minimum that we recommend for storage space. You may be able to get away with less if you save everything on the cloud or are considering Chromebooks, but it's wise to have the capacity in case you ever need it. If you want to install several applications or games, or save numerous images or videos, it will rapidly use space.

Ports

The CPU, RAM, and hard drive will have the most impact on performance, but the quantity and diversity of ports on your laptop are also quite important. You may utilize the various ports on your laptop to power it or connect USB devices. There must include a jack for a microphone or headset, at least one USB-C port, and at least one USB-A port. Consider USB-C charging and an SD reader. The SD reader is useful for photographers who often need to download pictures from their cameras otherwise they will need to have a dongle with them.

Webcam

You should equip your laptop with a camera. In 2023, computers without them them are still accessible for some reason. Even on lower-priced PCs, the majority of cameras still include 720p resolution. This is OK if you don't use it often or if you want to hide behind 720p's blurriness. You may be satisfied with a 1080p camera, since zoom remains an essential aspect of many people's professional lives.

Conclusion

When you've narrowed down your options to a few models, read some reviews and keep an eye out for non-technical factors, such as how the keyboard feels and how warm the bottom gets while it's being used on your lap. While specifications cannot tell you whether a hinge is poorly made or feels sticky, or if the lid scratches easily, reading reviews may be informative. But, keep in mind that technical perfection is not everything, so do not disregard your peculiarities. Do you want something to have a certain look? It is not wrong in any way. Some people dislike the idea of a plastic shell. Others wouldn't be caught carrying anything except black plastic. Design is both functionally and aesthetically important. Using a laptop, you don't like is not nice.
