The Apple Smart Battery Case is an iPhone accessory that provides additional power to certain iPhone models while protecting them. As a result, you can use your iPhone for longer periods of time before charging it again. Apple first introduced the Smart Battery Case in 2015 for the iPhone 6 and 6s series.

How Do They Work

The Smart Battery Cases resemble silicone cases in appearance but have an additional hump on the rear where the battery pack is located. The Smart Battery Case gives the iPhone more power when it is connected to the phone, acting as an external battery pack. The inside of the Smart Battery Cases has a soft, flexible lining that shields your iPhone from dents and scratches. Silky, soft-touch silicone is used for the outside, which improves grip. Your phone is simple to insert into the case and to remove as required thanks to the elastomer hinge.

How to Charge Smart Battery Case

All Smart Battery Cases from Apple are also Qi-certified chargers. This indicates that you may use any Qi-compatible charger to wirelessly charge them. With a Lightning to USB-C connection and a compatible power adapter (Apple's 18W, 29W, 30W, 61W, or 87W USB-C Power Adapter, or a comparable third-party adapter that supports USB Power Delivery) also enables Fast Charging. Lightning-to-USB charging is another option for powering it.
  • Install the most recent iOS update on your iPhone before using your Smart Battery Case. Additionally, make sure your Smart Battery Case is charged before using it.
  • Connect the Lightning to USB cable that was included with your iPhone to the case's Lightning port.
  • Plug the other end of the cable into an Apple USB power adapter, then plug the adapter into a power outlet. For the fastest charging, use an Apple USB-C power adapter that provides 18 or more watts of power.
  • While the case is charging, an amber status light will be visible. A green status indicator indicates that the case is completely charged.

Charging Status

When you connect your iPhone to your case, the Lock screen displays a charge status. Additionally, the status is shown when the casing is powered on or off. Look for the charging status in Today View on your iPhone if you've already secured it to your case.

How to Charge your Case and iPhone

  • Put your iPhone in its case and attach the Lightning to USB cord, which is included, to the Lightning connector on the smart case.
  • The other end of the cable should be plugged into an Apple USB power adapter, which should then be plugged into an electrical outlet. Use an Apple USB-C power adapter with 18 or more watts of power for the quickest charging.
You may see a green status light when the case is completely charged or an amber light when the case is charging while your iPhone isn't in it. You may wirelessly charge your iPhone with Qi-certified charging accessories if you have the Smart Battery Case for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max, or the Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR.

How Put on and Remove Battery Cases

  • Pull back the top edge of your cover to attach it, and then insert your iPhone. Your iPhone automatically charges when you place it in a Smart Battery Case that has been charged.
  • Slide your iPhone toward the top of the cover while pulling back the top edge of the case to remove it. Slide up rather than toward you to avoid damaging the connection.

iPhone Supported Models for Smart Battery Case

It is important to keep in mind that Apple did not release smart battery cases for all of its iPhone models. These smart cases are exclusively created for certain iPhone models only and are often incompatible with one another. For instance if you put an iPhone 6 in a case made for the iPhone 7, it will cover up the headphone port. You may find smart battery cases only for below mentioned iPhone models.
  • iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6S and 6S Plus
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
  • iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
Apple never launched smart battery cases for iPhone 8 and X.

Battery Life

Depending on how you use it, each cover can add up to 50% to 75% more battery life to your iPhone. To be more specific, we have made a list of how many hours of battery life each smart case for the iPhone uses.
iPhone Model Talk Time Internet Usage Video Playback
iPhone XS 33 Hours 21 Hours 25 Hours
iPhone XS Max 37 Hours 20 Hours 25 Hours
iPhone XR 39 Hours 22 Hours 27 Hours

How Apple Calculated Hours

Back in 2018, Apple conducted these tests with the help of iPhones versions, battery case units, and pre-production software.
  • A Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network was used for all of the talk testing.
  • Internet usage hours were determined using a dedicated web server and LTE and Wi-Fi networks, visiting snapshot copies of 20 well-known websites and receiving mail once per hour.
  • For video playback a 2-hour and 23-minute movie from iTunes was repeatedly played throughout the testing.

Test default settings

It's important to note that the default iPhone settings were used for these tests, with the following four exceptions.
  • Except for the Internet LTE test, Wi-Fi is connected to a network.
  • Bluetooth connected headphones were used.
  • Auto-Brightness and True Tone were disabled.
  • Wi-Fi was also set to Ask to Join Networks.
